1931 Herzfeld began excavations at Persepolis sponsored by the Oriental Institute with the financial backing of Ada Small Moore

    The Terrace
 Preparatory operations entailing the shapping of the foot of the mountain Kuh-e Rahmat (Mountain of Mercy).

    (2) THE DEFENSIVE WALL AND GARRISON QUARTERS
 A mud-brick fortification rising 10-15 m high protected parts of the terrace . The entire hill was included into the defensive system of the city.
 The defensive wall in the terrace was composed of: a buttress, a moat, the fortress wall itself with the towers, and the garrison quarters and street. The moat also protected the terrace against the torrents sweeping down the slope of the mountain during rainy season.
 A magnificent drainage tunnel cut out in the rock. It was not used for general drainage but for the collection of water.

    The Treasury
 Apart possibly for the sections of the defense system and the garrison quarters lining the fortification, the original treasury (I) was the first structure to be completed on the Persepolis Terrace.
 The treasury served as the administrative center of the site.
It was built in three distinct phases. (A) The original section as conceived by Darius; (B) Darius expanded doubling its original surface; (C) Xerxes destroyed the whole west wing of the Treasure and expanded it north in order to build the Harem.

    The Apadana
 It was finished by Xerxes. There is an inscription in glazed bricks which embellished parts of the exterior wall.
    THE PALACE OF DARIUS
 Stands on a platform which rises 2.20 m to 2.50 m above the floor level of the apadana.
    The Council Hall
 A similar arrangement of tribute bearers along the staircases is found in the Council Hall (Herzfeld “Tripylon” after three monumental doorways); Schmidt 107. The uncovered reliefs of dignitaries ascending the staircases were uncovered by Schmidt which dates it to the time of Darius I.
